Meet the 2024 Clinicians

ADULT CLINICIAN - Mark Stover

Mark Stover shares his passion for people and building community through pursuing the highest levels of artistry in choral music. Since September 2018 he has served as associate director of choirs at the University of Michigan where he conducts the Men's Glee Club and the University Choir, teaches conducting, and serves as conductor of the Michigan Youth Chamber Singers.

Mark Stover (continued)

Mark came to Ann Arbor from Northfield, Minnesota, home of Saint Olaf College, where he served on the music faculty as conductor of the St. Olaf Chapel Choir (SATB) and Viking Chorus (TTBB) while teaching conducting and a new course he designed titled, Music and Social Justice. Both of these choirs have regularly appeared in the annual St. Olaf Christmas Festival, a tradition held for over a century and regarded around the world as one of the great music festivals of the season. Stover led the Chapel Choir, Viking Chorus, and the Festival Mass Choir of over 400 voices in the St. Olaf Christmas Festival presented at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis at the 2018 National Convention of the American Choral Conductors Association (ACDA).

From 2018 through 2022, he conducted the Together In Hope Choir holding the role as artistic director for the Together In Hope Project. This work has led to performances throughout Rome, including opening the 17th Annual International Festival of Sacred Music and Art at the Papal Basilica St. Paul Outside the Walls. In July of 2022, Stover led the Together In Hop Choi and Trondheim Solistene in the world premiere of The Stranger (composed by Kim Andre Arnesen to raise global awareness about refugees and displaced person) at the Trondheim International Olavsfest, the largest annual cultural event in Norway. He conducted the U.S. premiere in St. Paul, MN at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in October of 2022. Additionally, Stover served for multiple seasons as the artistic director of Magnum Chorum, a semi-professional choral ensemble of over 60 voices based in Minneapolis-St Paul.

In April 2022 with the Men's Glee Club, Stover led the ensemble in the world premiere of Tesfa Wondemagegnehu's To Repair as a part of a full concert performance in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City On the heels of the premiere last spring, the Glee Club was invited to present the work and an accompanying lecture at the 2023 American Choral Conductors Association National Conference in Cincinnati, OH in February.

Mark Stover holds degrees from St Olaf College and Luther Seminary where he studies conducting and choral repertoire under the mentorship of Dr. Anton Armstrong and Dr. Paul Westermeyer. In addition to his professional role at the University of Michigan he is also pursuing the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting At Michigan State University, studying with Dr. David Ray,l Dr. Sandra Snow, and Dr. Jonathan Reed.


WORSHIP CLINICIAN - John Campbell

Rev. Dr. John W. Campbell started participating in music in church as a preschooler, and have never stopped. He has been a choir member, handbell ringer, percussionist, pianist, ad organist; but most of the time he has been director and/or coordinator of the music makers.

John holds degrees from Samford University, the University of Illinois, and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. After 25 years teaching in colleges, universities, and divinity schools, John went to Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in Huntington, WV, as full-time Minister of Music, 2013-2020; then during the pandemic to Enslow Park Presbyterian Church, Huntington, as Director of Music and Organist; and since November 2022 has served Buechel Park Baptist Church in Louisville, KY, as Minister for Music and Worship. John has been President-Elect and President for FABM, and is no stranger to conference regulars, having planed and led worship in recent years.

CONFERENCE PREACHER - Sara Clarke Turpin

Rev. Sara Clarke Turpin serves as Senior Pastor at Buechel Park Baptist Church in Louisville, KY, where she previously served as Associate Pastor for Spiritual Formation. She is a graduate of Georgetown College and received her M.Div. from the Baptist Seminary of Kentucky.

Sara loves engaging people of all ages in the stories of God and involving all in the mission of the church to share the love of Jesus. Sara also loves spending time with her husband, Neal, and their two young children, as well as playing the flute and occasionally even running a half marathon.

CHILDREN/YOUTH CLINICIAN - Katie Houts

Kaite Houts is a music educator, church musician, and composer who specializes in children's choirs and developing voices. As the sacred choral & curriculum editor for Choristers Guild, Katie curates and edits their comprehensive catalog of anthems, musicals, and resources for singers of all ages.

Katie directs the 80-voicce IGNITE choir (ages 5-12), which serves as the training program for Rise Up Children's Choir, Utah's premiere contemporary vocal performance group for youth; she also serves as on e of RUCC's in-house arrangers and accompanists. Katie teaches elementary music and middle school choir at Wasatch Charter School (Salt Lake City). She is a frequent presenter at sacred music conferences throughout the country and has served ELCA, USS, and UMC congregations as music director, worship curator, children's choir director, and organist. Katie is also a sough-after professional accompanist and studio musician.

HANDBELL CLINICIAN - Judy Phillips

Judy Phillips discovered handbells at the First Baptist Church of Royal Oak, I back in 1975. She has been ringing, directing, and composing for handbells ever since. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Public School Music from Western Michigan University as an oboe major.

Judy's Master of Church Music degree was earned from Concordia University, Wisconsin with a handbell emphasis. She studied conducting with Dr. William Payn, and handbell composition with Arnold Sherman. Judy is a retired elementary general music and band teacher. She now joyfully teaches Kindermusik classes for tiny ones and their families. She is an accomplished handbell music composer with more than 30 pieces in print. Over the years Judy has directed handbells at several churches, and is currently handbell director at Christ Church Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, MI. She also directs Bellissima! and the Adele Thomas Ringers, community groups sponsored by the Tuesday Musicale of Greater Pontiac, MI. Judy and her husband, Larry, attended their first FABM conference in 1996. She is looking forward to making wonderful music with her FABM family this year!

INSTRUMENTAL CLINICIAN - Kevin Padworski

Kevin T. Padworski serves as the Director of Voces Aureas at the University of Denver Lamont School of Music, Artistic Director of The Colorado Chorale, Chancel Choir Director at Augustana Lutheran Church, and Director of Vocal Music at Colorado Academy.

Kevin performs extensively, and has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards declaring mastery in multiple disciplines: conducting, voice, saxophone and keyboards. Professional appearances include the Aspen Music Festival, Colorado Repertory Singers, Colorado Choral Arts Society, Colorado Symphony, Colorado Symphony Chorus, Cincinnati Youth Choir, Dallas Symphony, CDINY Concerts Orchestra, Mid-America Concert Productions, Denver Brass , Evans Choir, Jubilate Deo Chorale and Orchestra, Lamont Symphony Orchestra, Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, Bravo! Vail Music Festival, American Baptist Churches USA, and numerous collaborative and solo performances.


Kevin holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in conducting and literature from the University of Colorado, and the master and bachelor of music degrees in conducting an music education from the University of Denver and Eastern University. He is an active composer and writes for soloists, instrumental, and choral ensembles with a particular interest in creating robust and engaging orchestrations and accompaniments. Kevin's music has been performed at local, state, regional, and national ACDA conferences, receiving premieres in venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Votivkirke in Vienna, and his commissions have received accolades including recognition from Americans for the Arts. His works are available through Walton, Santa Barbara Music Publishing Hal Leonard, Pavane, and MusicSpoke.

PIANO CLINICIAN - Joseph Martin

Joseph Martin, a native of North Carolina, earned his Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance at Furman University in Greenville,, South Carolina. Subsequently, he earned a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at the University of Texas Austin Joseph taught for five years in the Piano Pedagogy Department of the University of Texas.

While at Furman University, he was accompanist for choral director ad composer Milburn Price and, inspired by his teaching, Martin began to compose. He is a member of the staff of Shawnee Press, Inc. and the Hal Leonard Corporation as Director of Sacred Publications, with responsibilities for overseeing the editorial and creative direction of the company and also coordinating the recording and production aspects of future sacred publishing efforts.


His first solo piano recording, American Tapestry, was nominated for a Dove Award. This album along with his other recordings (Songs of the Journey, Celtic Tapestry, A Christmas Tapestry, and A Symphony of Carols) has been enormously popular in the sacred and secular markets. He has recorded for Yamaha's Disklavier series and has composed hundreds of commissioned works. His composition "Pieta" was honored with an award from the John Ness Beck Foundation.


Recognized throughout the United States for his many choral compositions, both sacred and secular, Joseph's music is published by numerous publishing houses. Over two thousand compositions are currently in print and the list continues to grow.


Joseph lives in Austin, Texas with his wife Sue.

ORGAN RECITALIST - T. Jared Stellmacher

T. Jared Stellmacher, native of Ripon, Wisconsin, is Director of Worship and Music at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Madison/Verona,, WI where he leads and oversees a diverse multi-campus music ministry. Jaren is also organist with the Chicago Gargoyle Brass and Organ Ensemble

Previous positions include Director of Music at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Watertown, WI; Director of Music at Redeemer Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Hinsdale IL; Interim Director of Music at First Church Congregational in Fairfield CT; Accompanist for the critically acclaimed 100+ voices Fairfield County Chorale; Assistant Organist at the historic Riverside Church in New York City; Associate Organist at the First Presbyterian Church in New Canaan CT; and Assistant Choral/Vocal Administrator at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music.

Jared has received many awards for his performance excellence, most notably first place in the American Guild of Organists Regional VI Competition for Young Organists held at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs; he then performed as a "Rising Star" at the National AGO Convention in Chicago. Jared received his MM from the Yale Institute of Sacred Music and Yale School of Music and BMus from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music.

Co-President/Treasurer - Mindy Phomvisay

As Music Director, Mindy directs the choir, accompanies worship services, leads the youth and children in music, and is co-director of a Summer Music Camp. A native of Alta, Iowa, Mindy is a graduate of Iowa State University and currently teaches Pre K-4 General Music in Fairfield, Iowa. She has been a director with the Ames Children's Choirs and is a flute and piano teacher. Mindy and her husband Aiddy are parents of three children, Elijah, Emma, and Ethan. The whole family enjoys coming to Green Lake for the FABM Conference and it is very special to each of them. Mindy is truly looking forward to serving on the Board and being a part of such meaningful work.

Co-President - Carol Teare

Her choirs have sung at Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center. During her career she has overseen the panning and building of two pipe organs for congregations she has served.

Carol was previously a hospital chaplain and Associate Region Minister for MidAmerican Baptist Churches, covering Iosa and Minnesota. As an educator, she teaches mindfulness-based meditation and was a public school music leader and member of the Waterloo Schools Board of Education.

She received a Master of Divinity degree from United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Northern Iowa. She is currently the Dean of the American Guild or Organists Cedar Valley Chapter.

This will be Rev. Teare's third term on the on the FABM Board, previously serving as President and Secretary. She also was a member of the Green Lake Conference Center Board of Directors from 2019-2022.


Carol has been attending the Conference for Church Musicians since 1978 and considers Green Lake to de a major influence on her spiritual journey.

Carol and her husband, Toby, have been married for 48 years and have two adult children and seven grandchildren who all live nearby and enjoy spending time together.

As the Executive Secretary of FABM, she continues to be a national resource in the area of handbells and choral leading. She feels that her basic calling is in teaching and continues to teach private piano, handbell ,and chime classes, as well as a Children/Youth Choir for the Southern Indiana Homeschool Educators.

Joyce started attending The Conference for Church Musicians in 1988 and was asked to be the Secretary on the FABM Board of Directors beginning summer of 2000. After serving the term of Secretary she then held the positions of President Elect and President. After a year off the Board, she came back and has served as the Executive Secretary since 2008. Joyce and her husband Scott have three married children and 10 grandchildren who all live in Southern Indiana. Many of them have attended the conference since 1988 and participated in the Children, Youth, and Adult Divisions of the Conference. It has become an important part of their summer family activities. She invites you to bring all of your family that has an interest in music whether it be to participate or be a part of the congregation for morning worship and evening celebrations.
